Oxford Brain Story

Building Brains for Lifelong Health

In partnership with the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative, the Oxford Brain Story aims to share the well-established science of brain development—explaining how early experiences shape lifelong health, behaviour, and resilience – with everyone in our community. Using a series of metaphors, the Brain Story offers a narrative framework for understanding how childhood adversity can influence later physical and mental health outcomes, and equally, how positive relationships and supportive environments can shift life trajectories, even in adulthood.

The Brain Story is relevant to anyone who works with children, families or adults. We are working with partners from Health and Social Care, Education, the Criminal Justice system and a range of voluntary organisations.

Our aim is to establish a shared understanding across organisations, professional groups and communities, with a shared language to talk about the impact of adversity and our role in mitigating its effects. Together we can use science to improve outcomes for both children and adults.
